Most of my friends have joked that the room under the stairs is secretly for me, and not a place for my kids to hide out, read, or play. They’re not entirely wrong – It’s well-known in my circle that I’m a huge Harry Potter fan and admit that I have all the original copies of the books, which I pre-ordered, waited in line for, and read within 24 hours of each release.
It should also come as no surprise, that the second date my husband and I ever went on was when I asked him to go to the movies and that I already had tickets. He agreed (duh), and then asked what movie…it was the midnight release showing of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

To really test his commitment, I dressed up as Harry Potter for Halloween that year. All that said, when we discovered this secret room under our stairs, Reggie immediately dubbed it the Harry Potter room, and my mind started whirling with ideas for the space.
Here’s what I came up with:

I picked out this cool wallpaper as the base of my inspiration, and went from there. I knew I wanted the space to be a reading nook, so I added some Ikea spice shelves – painted black – for book racks.

The ceiling area was unfinished under the staircase, so I sealed it off using bead board and some painted finishing wood pieces.

Then then fun part of adding all the different elements was next. All of the pieces are linked below.
TIP: If you plan to use the wallpaper I picked, you will need at least twice the amount you thought you needed. I had to reorder this several times because I ran out or didn’t have the right pieces to match up the design.
